Afghan government pardons 2,463 prisoners for Eid al-Fitr
The Afghan government has pardoned 2,463 prisoners on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr. This was announced by the Taliban leader Haibatullah Akhundzoda. The sentences of 3,152 prisoners were also commuted.

A special committee led the pardon process

According to official data, the procedure for releasing prisoners and commuting sentences on the occasion of the holiday was developed by a special committee headed by the Director General of the Judicial Inspection of the Supreme Court. This initiative is considered a step towards the country's humanitarian policy and ensuring social stability in society.

Release of Canadian soldier

Earlier, in January 2024, the Afghan government released David Lavery, a Canadian Armed Forces veteran who was arrested in Kabul in November 2023. According to the Veterans Transition Network, where the soldier worked, Lavery often visited Afghanistan to carry out humanitarian missions. He also helped evacuate 100 Afghans when US troops were leaving Afghanistan.

Taliban government and international relations

The Taliban government has been in power in Afghanistan since 2021. Its human rights record and methods of governance are regularly discussed in the international arena. At the same time, the government's amnesty and commutation of sentences can be seen as attempts to alleviate the general political and social situation in the country.

Only time will tell how effective these efforts will be in changing attitudes toward human rights and the justice system in Afghanistan.
