The U.S. May Hand Over Crimea to Russia: What Will Ukraine Do?

The U.S. May Hand Over Crimea to Russia: What Will Ukraine Do?
At an international negotiation set to take place on April 23 in London, the United States delegation will present its proposal to Ukraine and European allies to formally recognize Crimea as Russian territory and freeze the front line. This was reported by The Washington Post, citing several reliable sources.

Earlier, Bloomberg also wrote that the United States is prepared to recognize Crimea as part of Russia as part of a broader peace plan. According to The Wall Street Journal, this proposal was already delivered to representatives of the EU and Ukraine during a meeting in Paris on April 17.

Information ahead of the London meeting indicates that the U.S. plan includes official recognition of Crimea as Russian territory, and the lifting of certain sanctions imposed on Moscow. In return, Russia would be expected to completely halt military operations in Ukraine.

One of Ukrainian President Zelensky's advisors stated that the American proposal contains both acceptable and unacceptable provisions. A senior Western official described the pressure being applied by Washington on Kyiv as “surprisingly intense.”

The Washington Post notes that in exchange for territorial concessions, Ukraine’s allies are promising security guarantees and large-scale economic recovery plans.

Currently, the eyes of the entire international community are on these historic talks in London, as their outcome could have major implications not only for Ukraine and Russia but for the future of Europe and global geopolitics.
