Migrants commit only 2% of crimes in Russia

Migrants commit only 2% of crimes in Russia
The Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu, provided accurate data on the level of crimes involving migrants in the country. According to him, this indicator makes up a very small share of the overall crime rate - only about 2 percent.

What do the official figures say?

As Shoigu noted in an interview with the TASS news agency, by the end of 2023, there were about 6.3 million foreign citizens on the territory of Russia. At the beginning of 2024, this figure was 5.9 million people. At the same time, the number of crimes committed by migrants has not changed significantly - 38.6 thousand cases. This is equal to 2 percent of the total crime statistics.

Cases of crime and deprivation of citizenship

Shoigu added that the share of migrants whose legal period of stay in the country has expired has exceeded 10%. During 2023, 3.4 million administrative offenses were registered against foreign citizens in Russia.

Also, almost 1.5 thousand people were deprived of Russian citizenship for committing serious and very serious crimes.

The crime rate is decreasing, but...

Sergey Shoigu also touched upon the general crime situation in Russia. According to him, in recent years, the country has been experiencing a steady decline in the crime rate. The number of registered crimes in 2024 amounted to 1.9 million - which is 1.8% less than last year.

However, at the same time, serious and very serious crimes committed by organized criminal structures increased by 17.1%. Fraud cases increased by 2.8%, and corruption-related offenses by 5.8%.

Data from the Internal Affairs Directorate: Crimes by migrants increased in January

According to data provided by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs earlier, the number of crimes committed by foreigners and illegal migrants in January 2024 reached 4.4 thousand. This is 17.3% more than in the same period last year.

Official data show that migrants in Russia are not the main factor in crime. On the contrary, their share in the total number of crimes is very small. However, some criminal cases and offenses still remain relevant. Therefore, measures to prevent and control crime are being consistently implemented by the Russian authorities.
