The death toll from the horrific explosion that took place on April 28 in Bandar Abbas, one of the largest ports in southern Iran, continues to rise. According to the latest data, 36 people died and more than 1,200 were injured in the tragedy.
The fire that initially broke out after the explosion in the port area was brought under control in a short time. However, due to the presence of bitumen and various chemicals in several containers stored in the eastern part of the port, the fire spread further and became difficult to extinguish.
Iranian authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion, and initial indications are that it was not a military incident. Videos released by local media showed the horrific scene of the explosion, with a huge mushroom cloud forming in the sky and windows shattered in buildings within a radius of several kilometers around the port.
Iran's Health Ministry has declared a state of emergency in the Hormuzgan province, where the incident occurred, and has strongly recommended that residents stay indoors, close windows, and wear face masks.
President Masoud Pizishian said the country's interior minister had been urgently dispatched to the area to personally monitor the situation and determine the cause of the explosion. The president also expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and promised a thorough investigation into all aspects of the tragedy.
The international community is also offering Iran assistance. In particular, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to the Iranian leadership and people and announced that practical assistance would be provided to extinguish the fire. Two special aircraft of the Russian Emergencies Ministry - the Be-200ChS amphibious aircraft and the Il-76 military transport aircraft - are expected to be sent to the port area to provide assistance.
Currently, measures are being actively continued to stabilize the situation in the port and completely extinguish the fire. The Iranian public and the whole world are concerned about this tragic event that occurred in the south of the country. Investigations into the causes of the explosion and the circumstances surrounding it are ongoing. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
