Donald Trump: “I’m saving Ukraine. Without me, the country would have been quickly defeated”
U.S. President Donald Trump, in an interview with The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, shared his views on the war in Ukraine. According to him, the assistance being provided by America is “saving the Ukrainian state,” because without U.S. involvement, this country would have been defeated by Russia in a short time.

During the interview, Goldberg asked Trump why he shows much less sympathy toward other countries that have been subjected to pressure and aggression from Russia. In response, Trump recalled that during his first term as president, he had delivered Javelin anti-tank systems to Ukraine. According to him, without these weapons, Russian forces would have easily entered Kyiv in 2022, and the war would have ended quickly.

“I believe I am the one saving that country. Without my involvement, Ukraine would have been defeated very quickly. Let’s face it — there is a major military power there (referring to Russia). So I think I am giving Ukraine serious help,” said Trump.

Journalist Goldberg also asked the U.S. president what kind of actions by Russian President Vladimir Putin might force him to take the side of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump responded by saying that he does not consider himself a supporter of Zelensky personally, but rather of Ukraine as a state.

“I’ve had some misunderstandings with Zelensky. When he was here, in the White House, sitting right in this chair you’re in, you could feel it. Zelensky just should have kept quiet, you understand?” — Trump added.

In addition, Trump once again blamed his predecessor, President Joe Biden, for the war in Ukraine. He also emphasized that the hostilities are nearing their end:

“Let’s see what happens in the coming weeks. We’re in the final stage.”

It is known that in mid-February, the United States began separate negotiations with both Russia and Ukraine. However, these talks have not yet resulted in a complete ceasefire.

Let us recall that the peace plan proposed by the U.S. included a proposal by Washington to recognize Crimea as Russian territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, for his part, declared his firm position and stated that he would never legally recognize Crimea as part of Russia.
