Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Prime Minister Park Thae-song on April 30 remotely launched the construction of the Russia-DPRK automobile bridge over the Tumannaya River.
“This is truly a new important stage for Russian-Korean relations. Its [bridge's] significance is not limited to engineering tasks,” Mishustin said.
The bridge, which is planned to be built over a year and a half, will allow for automobile traffic between the two countries. Currently, only railway and air traffic is carried out between the Russian Federation and North Korea.
The agreement on the construction of the bridge was concluded in June 2024, during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the DPRK.
The total length of the crossing is 4.7 kilometers, of which 1 kilometer is the bridge itself (424 meters on the Russian side, 581 meters on the North Korean side), the width of the bridge is 7 meters (two-lane).
According to the Ministry of Transport, the checkpoint on the Russian side of the bridge "can serve 300 vehicles and 2,850 people per day - there is a possibility of increasing it."
Russia and North Korea signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement in June 2024. This document serves as the basis for North Korean troops to be involved in the war against Ukraine.
