
US President Donald Trump said that "good news" on resolving the conflict in Ukraine could be announced in the coming days. He made the statement during a meeting with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
"I think it is possible that there will be positive news on Ukraine today, tomorrow or Friday. But we will watch," Trump said at a press conference in Doha.
The US leader also expressed special gratitude to Qatar for Washington's diplomatic initiatives, in particular, for its assistance in resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
Meeting with Putin in Istanbul? Trump did not rule out
President Trump also did not rule out the possibility of meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Istanbul. He said that he was ready to make this visit if this meeting would serve to stop the hostilities in Ukraine, restore peace and save lives.
“If the meeting in Istanbul is a step towards peace, of course I will go there,” Trump said, as confirmed by US Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg.
According to him, Trump’s participation in Istanbul, if Putin also comes, “could be a completely unexpected and historic meeting.”
Russia-Ukraine talks: Istanbul again at the center of diplomacy
As is known, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to hold direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on May 15 without preconditions. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, in turn, expressed his readiness to receive Putin personally.
According to Yuri Ushakov, an assistant to the Russian president, the Turkish government and the Russian Consulate General are carrying out technical and organizational preparations for this possible meeting in Istanbul.
