Peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine may be entering a new phase. According to Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, a potential meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky can only take place after delegations reach specific agreements.
— Such a meeting would be the result of the delegations' work. It can only happen once concrete agreements are established, — Peskov told reporters.
He noted that the Russian side is currently preparing a list of conditions for a ceasefire, which will be submitted to Ukraine in the coming days. This was previously confirmed by Russian lead negotiator Vladimir Medinsky.
Ukrainian delegation head Rustem Umerov stated at a press conference after the negotiations in Istanbul:
— The next step should be a direct meeting at the leadership level.
Medinsky also confirmed that Ukraine had requested such a meeting and that the Russian delegation had taken this into account.
It is worth recalling that prior to the negotiations, Ukrainian President Zelensky repeatedly invited Putin to a personal meeting in Turkey and even traveled to Ankara for this purpose. Despite the invitations, the Russian president has yet to respond.
Zamin.uz editorial note:
A possible meeting between Putin and Zelensky could be a major step toward peace talks. However, such a summit depends on concrete agreements at the delegation level. What do you think — could such high-level dialogue help end the conflict?
