European leaders hold discussions ahead of Trump–Putin talks
On the evening of Sunday, May 18, ahead of the anticipated conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, European heads of state held significant consultations with Washington regarding the situation in Ukraine.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Italy's Prime Minister contacted the U.S. President via phone to discuss the war in Ukraine and prospects for peace.

According to German official Stephanus Cornelius, the Trump-Putin conversation will occur tomorrow, Monday, after which discussions and exchanges of views will continue.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer noted that the conversation thoroughly covered the severe consequences of the war for both sides and diplomatic measures aimed at ending hostilities. Potential further European sanctions were also discussed in case Russia does not seriously commit to a ceasefire and peace negotiations.

French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on his social media page: “Tomorrow, President Putin must accept the unconditional 30-day ceasefire proposed by Trump and supported by Ukraine and Europe, and demonstrate his commitment to peace.”
