Zelensky: Ukraine will never retreat from its territory

Zelensky: Ukraine will never retreat from its territory
On May 19, during the evening briefing, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky clarified Kyiv's position after the telephone conversation between the Presidents of Russia and the United States — Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. According to him, Ukraine under no circumstances will withdraw its troops from its territories.

“This is my constitutional duty”

In his speech, Zelensky emphasized that ensuring national security and protecting the state territory is his direct duty as the president:

“No ultimatums will be accepted. No one will abandon their land, their people, or their home. If Russia is setting the withdrawal of our troops as a condition, this means they do not want peace. They understand well: Ukraine will not do that.”

Reaction following the Trump-Putin conversation

Zelensky also drew attention to the statements made by Donald Trump. The US president emphasized that Russia is ready for compromise, and at the same time expressed hope for the beginning of direct negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.

“First of all — ceasefire”

According to Zelensky, true readiness to end the war must start with a ceasefire on the front. He said:

“If Moscow really wants peace, they must be the first to stop the fire. Then we would actually see the readiness for compromise.”

From the Zamin.uz editorial board:
Zelensky’s position, prioritizing sovereignty and security over compromise, remains a major obstacle in any steps toward a Ukraine-Russia agreement. What do you think: which side should be the first to make a concession for peace?
