Turkish security forces have detained another group of soldiers accused of involvement in the 2016 coup attempt in the country. Euronews reported, citing the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office, that 63 military personnel have been issued arrest warrants as part of the ongoing operation, 56 of whom have already been detained.
According to the prosecutor's office, the detainees are suspected of being members of the illegal structure known as the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETO). The Turkish government has accused the group of organizing the 2016 coup attempt. The group's leader, cleric Fethullah Gulen, has denied the charges and died in the United States in October 2024.
The military operation was carried out simultaneously in 36 provinces and involved officers and non-commissioned officers of various ranks from the Air Force, Land Forces, Gendarmerie and Navy. Among them are 4 colonels, 8 lieutenant colonels, 12 majors, 15 captains and 24 non-commissioned officers.
The prosecutor's office said that these individuals used their positions to try to strengthen their influence in state structures through FETO networks. According to the Turkish government, FETO is a structure that poses a serious threat to the country's security.
It is noted that since 2016, about 25,800 military personnel have been arrested in Turkey on suspicion of having links to FETO. In total, more than 40,000 people have been detained and investigated on various levels of suspicion.
The coup attempt in Turkey in July 2016 was suppressed by government forces within hours. During the clashes, 290 people were killed and more than 2,000 civilians were injured. Following these events, a state of emergency was imposed in the country for several months.
