Passing IELTS in Russia can lead to imprisonment!
Taking the IELTS exam, which is widely used as an international language certificate in the Russian Federation, can lead to serious legal consequences for citizens. This was emphasized in official warnings issued by the country's Prosecutor General's Office and the Federal Security Service.

The British Council, which currently organizes the exam, has been recognized as "unacceptable" in Russia. According to the prosecutor's office, the British Council secretly promotes the interests of Great Britain through its educational and cultural activities, including LGBT propaganda.

According to the official statement of the Prosecutor General's Office, the organization is trying to spread "British values \u200b\u200bunder the guise of educational activities." Therefore, persons who cooperate with this organization or participate in its events may be held liable under Article 284.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

According to international lawyer Artem Kliga, even taking the IELTS exam abroad is likely to be considered "financing an unacceptable organization." In this case, a person may be imprisoned for up to 5 years.

In addition, the provision of links, materials and advertising related to the activities of the British Council to the public is considered “participation in the activities of an inappropriate organization” in accordance with Article 20.33 of the Code of Administrative Offenses.

According to lawyer Anastasia Burakova, individuals may be fined up to 15 thousand rubles, and legal entities - up to 100 thousand rubles.

In 2021, the Oxford Russia Fund also received such a status, and since then many international projects related to scientific and educational activities have been suspended.

This decision caused a great stir among the student community in the country. Because IELTS is one of the main requirements not only in the field of education, but also in the process of finding a job and moving.
