The chill in relations between Russia and the United States has been confirmed once again: according to official information from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the next round of planned negotiations to normalize diplomatic relations between the two countries has been canceled. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that this decision was made at the initiative of the American side.

Zakharova emphasized that the main focus of the talks was on "removing irritants" and fully restoring the operations of both countries’ embassies. However, the negotiations were halted by the American negotiators prior to the scheduled meeting. According to Zakharova, the Russian side does not expect this pause to last long, but no specific reason for the cancellation of the talks was provided.

It should be noted that the first two rounds of negotiations aimed at improving relations between the two states took place in Istanbul on February 27 and April 10, 2024. The Russian delegation was led by the country’s ambassador to the US, Alexander Darichev, while the American delegation was headed by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Sonata Coulter.

According to Darichev, during the meetings, the issue of Russian diplomatic property in the US and its legal status was also discussed. Earlier this week, the Russian diplomat said that the new stage of consultations could be held in Moscow in the near future. However, this information has not yet been officially confirmed by the American side.

Relations between Russia and the US have seriously deteriorated in recent years, and many pressing issues remain unresolved. Experts believe that a decline in the activity of diplomatic channels will become a serious obstacle to restoring mutual trust and cooperation.

The interests of both countries intersect in a very complex global situation, so the suspension of diplomatic dialogue is a worrying sign not only for the two states but for the entire world. The international community is calling on the leaders of Russia and the US to return to dialogue as soon as possible and to resolve existing problems through peaceful, constructive means.
