One of the events that has been causing great discussion in the South Korean political scene in recent days is the scandal surrounding Kim Gong-hee, the wife of former President Yun Seok-yeol. According to local media reports, Sunmyung Women's University, one of the most prestigious universities in the country, has decided to revoke Ms. Kim's master's degree after a three-and-a-half-year investigation, accusing her of plagiarism.
Kunming University has also expressed its reaction to the situation and has begun the procedure to review and, if necessary, revoke Kim Gong-hee's doctoral degree. According to university representatives, Ms. Kim does not have the right to continue her doctoral program without a master's degree. According to the law, in order to obtain any doctoral degree, an applicant must first have a master's degree. Therefore, along with the loss of her master's degree, her doctoral degree is also in danger.
The university administration is currently collecting all the necessary documents, in particular, official information about the cancellation of the master's degree and Kim Gong-hee's consent to use other relevant documents. It was noted that all efforts have been mobilized to organize the process in a technically and legally transparent and expeditious manner. The issue will be discussed at the Council of the School of Engineering and Technology, after which the final decision will be submitted to the Supreme Council of Kunming University.
This incident also caused a great stir in the academic environment of South Korea. It was noted that in order to maintain the transparency and prestige of the higher education system, an uncompromising approach is used in such cases. Universities announce that they will take all measures to protect their reputation and create a fair and just scientific environment for the younger generation.
It is worth recalling that in June 2024, the then President of South Korea, Yun Seok-yol, paid an official visit to Uzbekistan with his wife, Kim Gong-hee, where issues of strategic partnership and innovative cooperation between the two countries were discussed. Trade, energy, infrastructure, technology exchange and practical partnership in agriculture were on the agenda of that meeting.
This event is considered as an important lesson in the country to observe the principles of science and justice, fight against scientific plagiarism. All academic and legal bodies in the country show a firm position on this issue.
