In the near future, drones may become not only a reconnaissance tool, but a full-fledged weapon of combat. The European Union is forming a completely new defense doctrine in response to Russia’s potential military threat. This was stated seriously by the European Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, euronews.com reports.
According to him, if Russian President Vladimir Putin orders an attack on any NATO member state, European countries will have to confront a powerful army that is “battle-hardened” and has deeply mastered drone technology.
Kubilius emphasized the following:
“Russia can increase its drone production capacity to 5 million units per year. If we do not approach this figure, it will be impossible to achieve superiority in confrontation.”
He especially noted that a zone called the “valley of death” has appeared on the front line in Ukraine. No object, not even a tank, can survive under the control of drones there. According to Kubilius’ description, tanks can remain “alive” in this area for only 6 minutes.
Simply having drones in storage is not enough
Like many other defense experts, Kubilius draws special attention to one point — storing drones in a warehouse is not enough for success. In modern military conditions, drones must be constantly updated, adapted, and modernized depending on the situation at the front. This is only possible if there are permanent working groups consisting of manufacturers, engineers, and pilots.
According to him, Europe must compete not only in the number of drones, but also with production flexibility, real-time adaptability, and strategic advantage.
NATO is not yet ready
However, currently NATO countries are not fully prepared for such a large-scale drone attack. This was emphasized by Alpine Eagle startup CEO Jan-Hendrik Boellens. He works at a German company producing drones for Ukraine and knows the real demands of the front line.
Defense spending will increase sharply
In this regard, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also made a necessary statement. According to him, it is necessary to strengthen air defense by at least five times. In addition, large investments must be directed to drone technologies.
At the NATO summit held on June 25, an important agreement was reached: by 2035, every member state must increase its military spending to at least 5 percent of its annual GDP. This is regarded as a strategic approach to European security.
Drones are becoming the main weapon of war
The fact is that the war in Ukraine has shown the whole world that drones are not just reconnaissance tools. Now, Europe is trying to boost production in this field, launch special projects, and form a defense concept based on drones.
In any case, drones have already become the “heavy artillery” of modern warfare. Europe can no longer turn a blind eye to this reality. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
