Chechnya’s Contribution to the Ukraine War: The Big Numbers Behind the “Effort”
In recent years, Chechnya’s involvement in the war in Ukraine has only grown in scale, reports the @Kadyrov_95 Telegram channel. According to the head of the republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, to date more than 60,000 fighters from Chechnya have been sent to the front, of which more than 22,000 are considered volunteers. Currently, about 13,000 men are serving on the front line as part of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Rosgvardiya, Akhmat special units, and the Chechen Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In May 2024, Kadyrov, in a meeting with the Russian president, stated that since the start of the war, more than 55,500 Chechen fighters had been sent. At the same time, the total number of security forces does not include those in barracks, those on vacation, or soldiers who have returned from the battlefield as part of rotations. Some human rights activists note that there are cases of forced contract signing in Chechnya.

Chechnya’s material and technical “contribution” to the war is also evident. Earlier this year, Ramzan Kadyrov reported sending five armored Changan pickups, made in China, to the front. Previously, it had already been announced that vehicles, drones, and military equipment were supplied to Russian units. In October 2024, Kadyrov said that 100 special “jihad vehicles” were given to the “People’s Front for Russia” movement. Additionally, Chechen authorities sent 78 UAZ “Patriot,” UAZ-452, and “Niva” vehicles for the war.

The “Hero of Russia Akhmat-Hadji Kadyrov” foundation is also actively involved in technical supply and material aid. During the war, the foundation purchased 2,515 units of special vehicles, 12,650 quadcopters (drones), 32,781 communication devices, and 112,857 full military equipment kits. The foundation’s total spending on the war has exceeded 40 billion rubles (over 500 million dollars).

These data show that Chechnya is contributing significantly to the war in Ukraine not only with fighters but also logistically and materially. The equipment, drones, and gear sent to the front expand the possibilities for the troops, and Kadyrov and his team, through this, maintain a special influence in Moscow.

What consequences Chechnya’s active participation in the Russia–Ukraine war might have in the near future remains a subject of analysis.
