Another important page in European history has been opened in London: on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Germany and the United Kingdom signed a strategic friendship and bilateral cooperation agreement, reported reuters.com. The agreement was solemnly signed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The new strategic cooperation agreement aims not only to strengthen defense and security, but also to further enhance ties in foreign policy, economics, and domestic affairs. Chancellor Merz emphasized that Berlin and London will now cooperate more closely in all areas. Following the negotiations, it was announced that both countries have agreed on joint plans regarding counter-terrorism, migration flow control, innovation, and economic development.
At the same time, Germany’s cooperation with France and the UK within the E3 mechanism for foreign policy and security is being further consolidated. This agreement indicates that Europe is now seriously working on building its own independent deterrence and defense capabilities, no longer relying solely on the United States.
Additionally, measures will be coordinated to strengthen NATO’s northern and eastern flanks. In the defense industry sphere, joint projects are planned, in particular the development of modern missiles with a range of up to 2000 kilometers. According to experts, these changes in European geopolitics could pave the way for the formation of new strategic alliances and power centers.
