Ice between the Koreas: Pyongyang’s resolute rejection

Relations between North and South Korea have once again become tense: Kim Yo Jong, the sister of Kim Jong Un and one of the influential figures of the country's political elite, has categorically rejected all reconciliation attempts by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, reports aljazeera.com.

According to reports, South Korean officials have announced their decision to temporarily stop the propaganda broadcasts that had been carried out in the border area. However, Kim Yo Jong described this step as “a temporary suspension of something that should not have been done in the first place.” She emphasized that if Seoul thinks past political events can be forgotten with a few emotional words, this is a serious and unforgivable mistake.

She also called South Korean President Lee Jae-myung’s idea to invite Kim Jong Un to the APEC summit “wishful thinking.” According to Kim Yo Jong, the new government’s commitment to a military alliance with the US and its stance against Pyongyang are almost no different from the policies of the previous conservative president Yoon Suk Yeol.

“No matter what policy Seoul pursues or what proposals it makes, Pyongyang is not interested. We see no reason for meeting or negotiating with South Korea,” said Kim Yo Jong.

For reference, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung came to power in June this year after Yoon Suk Yeol’s resignation. The Democratic Party he leads is known as a supporter of improving relations between the two countries, but so far, no practical results have been observed.

Thus, the situation on the Korean Peninsula has become even more acute. As hopes for negotiations and reconciliation fade, security issues again take center stage. The public is waiting to see in which direction relations between the Koreas will develop.
