In recent days, serious discussions about nuclear weapons have intensified in America, reports Haqqin.az. Especially the sharp statements of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and the actions being taken by the US in nuclear policy have attracted the attention of American politicians, analysts, and the public.
The head of the US Arms Control Association, Daryl Kimball, called Medvedev’s words “emotional and childish.” In his view, these statements resemble the frightening fantasies of a child. However, Americans also see in these words a serious threat that could lead to unwanted nuclear tension.
At the same time, many politicians and experts in the US place the main blame for the current situation not on Medvedev, but on President Donald Trump. According to Atlantic Institute nuclear strategy specialist Elena Petrov, this is “a very delicate moment.” In her opinion, by publicly announcing the redeployment of nuclear submarines, Trump is simultaneously increasing the level of threat and raising the likelihood of confrontation.
Trump’s former adviser John Bolton also sharply criticized the president’s decisions. In an interview with CNN, he called these actions “a very dangerous business.”
Another notable aspect for observers — for the first time since 2008, the United States handed over nuclear weapons to the United Kingdom. On July 16, an American military aircraft took off from the Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a nuclear weapon and a transponder, and landed at the Lakenheath airbase in the United Kingdom. The flight route was broadcast live on the internet.
Bloomberg notes that such an open movement of nuclear weapons could serve as a clear “signal” for Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Serious nuclear-related confrontations and the political games behind them show that a new dangerous stage for global stability is beginning. According to experts, objectively assessing the situation and maintaining political balance remain the most important tasks.
