The global political scene is once again full of intense events. In particular, the United States has taken another serious diplomatic step to end the long-standing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This was reported by journalists of Poland's well-known publication Onet.pl, based on their sources.
On August 6, a closed-door meeting was held in Moscow between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American businessman Steve Witkoff, during which a “very beneficial” offer sent by the Donald Trump administration was discussed.
According to Onet.pl sources, this offer includes several important points:
– Temporary ceasefire (not a peace agreement, but a provisional truce);
– Recognition of Russia’s de facto control over the occupied territories in Ukraine (the resolution of the issue could be postponed for 49 or 99 years);
– Lifting of most economic and political sanctions against Russia, along with restoring long-term energy cooperation and resuming Russian gas and oil imports.
Interestingly, the proposal package does not contain guarantees regarding NATO's expansion or the halting of military aid to Ukraine. However, according to journalists, the Russian side agreed to this last point.
These details have not yet been confirmed or denied by official sources. Both parties — the US and Russia — are acting cautiously regarding such complex political processes.
According to reports, at the time Steve Witkoff visited Moscow, Donald Trump was preparing to deliver his sharp demands to the Kremlin. If these demands are not fulfilled within the given time, the US would impose customs duties on countries buying oil from Russia. This move is considered serious pressure on the Kremlin.
After Witkoff and Putin’s meeting, Trump held detailed consultations with European allies. Among the discussed topics was also a proposal to hold tripartite negotiations involving the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, which Trump intends to organize between August 11–17.
The Kremlin seems to have taken the offer seriously. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that a face-to-face meeting with the US leader would take place soon and proposed the United Arab Emirates as a possible venue. He also noted that he is not against meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but certain conditions need to be created for that, which is still a distant prospect.
Bloomberg also reported via its sources that Trump plans to discuss a ceasefire and the issue of “territorial exchange” with Putin. However, what exactly such an exchange means has not been clarified.
It is known that Putin has repeatedly stated that if Ukraine completely withdraws its troops from the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions, Russia is ready to cease fire. However, despite the formal annexation of these territories into the Constitution of the Russian Federation, none of them are fully controlled by Russian forces.
At present, the entire international community is closely monitoring these developments. If the initiative succeeds, it may put an end to one of the most casualty-heavy armed conflicts in the modern world. Therefore, next week’s events will have great political significance not only for Europe but for the whole world.
