Another controversial situation has arisen on the global diplomatic stage. The French government expressed serious dissatisfaction with the new sanctions imposed by the US administration. The measures concern restrictions that Washington introduced against foreign individuals involved in the investigations of the International Criminal Court (ICC). This was stated in a report from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to information, the United States imposed sanctions on four ICC judges, including Frenchman Nicolas Guillou. This decision particularly provoked protest in Paris. French officials stressed that such a step by the US contradicts the principles of judicial independence and could undermine the foundations of justice.
In the statement of the Paris Foreign Ministry, it was noted that France considered this US position as a “disappointing case.” At the same time, they emphasized that imposing sanctions on judges for their work is illegal and does not correspond to democratic principles.
It should be recalled that recently US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the introduction of sanctions in connection with ICC investigations against US and Israeli citizens. The sanctions list included Canadian Kimberly Prost, Frenchman Nicolas Guillou, Fijian Nazhat Shameem Khan, and Senegalese Mame Mandiaye Niang — prominent lawyers and judges.
France regards this situation as direct interference with the international justice system and its use as a tool of political pressure. Experts believe that this conflict may become another serious test point in relations between the United States and the European Union.
