According to The Wall Street Journal, citing American officials, the Pentagon has, for several months, been restricting the use of long-range missiles and artillery systems by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to conduct deep strikes against strategic targets on Russian territory.
Sources emphasize that this decision significantly limits Ukraine’s ability to carry out military operations. It is noted that Washington is trying, in this way, to push the Kremlin’s leadership toward starting peace negotiations.
The Pentagon’s position is that the use of long-range weapons to hit targets deep inside Russia could lead to a further escalation of the conflict. For this reason, the US has effectively placed a veto on such attempts by Kyiv.
At the same time, the Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly stressed that such restrictions seriously affect the country’s defense capabilities. Striking military infrastructure and supply routes located deep within Russian territory could provide Ukraine with an advantage on the front line.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the White House is pursuing a cautious policy in this matter, seeking to avoid further escalation. Officials believe Washington aims to contain the war and create conditions for potential negotiations with Moscow.
