National Guardsmen in Washington allowed to carry weapons

National Guard members in Washington, D.C., have been authorized to carry firearms. According to DW, weapons are to be used only if there is a direct threat to life.

Currently, around 1,900 guardsmen are stationed around the White House, National Mall, train stations, and metro stops. The Pentagon described the measure as an effort to reduce crime.

Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to the capital in early August, citing rising crime. However, official statistics indicate that violent crimes have been declining in recent years.
