At one of the schools in the city of Minneapolis, on August 27, a disturbing and shocking incident occurred. The city community remembered this dark day — an armed attack took place at the school, resulting in at least 2 children being killed, and another 17 students receiving various injuries. This was reported by the BBC agency.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the event is considered a crime directed against Catholic believers, and authorities are attempting to classify it as a terrorist act. The attack occurred at the Annunciation Church and school building located in the south of the city.
During the attack, children were participating in a religious ceremony at the school and church. According to law enforcement, two children aged 8 and 10 died from gunshot wounds fired through the church windows. The attacker, 23-year-old Robin Westman, committed suicide at the scene. The police identified him, but the reason why he carried out the attack has not yet been revealed.
Initial information about the incident was received by the police at around 08:00 local time. According to law enforcement, the attacker approached the church and fired through the windows at people using three types of weapons — two kinds of rifles and a pistol. Additionally, a smoke bomb was found at the scene.
A 10-year-old child who survived the incident said that his friend saved him:
“I was sitting two seats to the left of the window. My friend Victor lay on top of me to protect me, but he himself was wounded from behind.”
Thus, this incident not only caused deep grief and fear among the city’s residents, but also reminded the entire country of the need to protect children and create a safe environment in schools. Police and the FBI continue the investigation, and all details of the attack are expected to be revealed soon.
