55-year-old Tang Weihua has been tirelessly searching for her missing child for 26 years. Her son, Wang Lei, who was kidnapped in 1999 at the age of four, may now be found with the help of a new step by his mother — she offered her apartment in Shanghai as a reward. According to Tang, this apartment belonged to her late son’s grandfather, and his greatest dream was to see his grandson once more. She believes that this offer could inspire someone who is truly ready to help.
The real estate market in Shanghai is very expensive: prices per square meter usually start from 100,000 yuan (about 14,000 USD). Tang and her spouse have spent nearly 4 million yuan (560,000 USD) so far to find their son, but they have not lost hope and continue trying every year.
The child’s kidnapper, a man surnamed Lu, was arrested in 1999 and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, he was released in 2022 for good behavior. Although Tang hates him, she watched him and his family every year, hoping to get even a little information about her son’s fate. However, so far all the information he provided has not yielded results.
The Chinese government launched the “Tuanyuan” (“Reunion”) program in 2021, which has succeeded in identifying hundreds of kidnapped children. This initiative encourages citizens, if they have doubts about their children’s origin, to submit DNA samples to the police.
