Geneva could become a key venue for talks between Zelenskyy and Putin

German Chancellor Friedrich Mers stated that potential direct talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin could take place in Geneva, Switzerland.

At a joint press conference held in Berlin on Tuesday, September 2nd, with Swiss President Karin Keller-Zutter, Mers openly expressed his views on this matter. According to him, Geneva is considered the most suitable platform for a ceasefire and a peace agreement.

The head of the German government also announced that he would make this proposal more openly during the meeting of the "volunteer coalition" on Ukraine, which is planned to be held in a hybrid format in Paris on September 4. Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron also mentioned that he supports holding a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy in Geneva.

In his speech, Swiss President Karin Keller-Zutter emphasized that the government is fully prepared to organize such a meeting in Geneva. According to him, since many central offices of international organizations are located here, Geneva is considered an "ideal point" for peace negotiations.

"The most important thing is that the parties are ready to listen to each other and at least move forward. To stop the war, it is necessary for them to engage in direct communication. But, of course, the implementation of this will depend on the consent of all parties to sit at the negotiating table," the Swiss leader said in his speech.

It is emphasized that the organization of such a high-level summit in Geneva could open a new page in the path to ending the Ukraine-Russia war.
