US President Donald Trump has tasked the Pentagon with further strengthening the US armed forces and, if necessary, preparing them to contain the actions of Russia and China. This was announced by the country's Defense Minister, Pete Hegset, in an interview with Fox News.
According to him, the indifference and sluggishness of the previous administration contributed to the rapprochement of Moscow and Beijing.
"Therefore, President Trump ordered the Ministry of Defense to intensify preparations. The goal is to restore the military spirit and increase capacity through the restructuring of the armed forces at the historical level," Hegset said.
He added that these steps are being taken not to seek conflict in any way, but rather to prevent conflicts.
"Military demonstrations or parades are natural, but they should not turn into war," the minister stressed.
According to Hegset, the US currently intends to maintain strategic superiority in space, air, sea, and underwater. He also mentioned the "Golden Dome" defense system, noting that China does not yet have such an opportunity.
"President Trump has a good relationship with Xi Jinping. This will serve as an impetus for cooperation between the two countries. However, in any case, we must always be ready," Hegset concluded.
Recall that on September 3, a large military parade dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Second World War was held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. It was attended by more than 20 heads of state, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump, however, made a brief statement on social media, writing: "Convey my sincere wishes to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, who are planning a conspiracy against the US."
Putin, at a press conference following his visit to China, specifically noted that Trump's words were "not without humor."
