From January to July 2025, the population of Kazakhstan grew by 124,500 people, or 0.61%. As a result, by August 1, the country's total population reached 20,407,800, according to the National Statistics Committee of Kazakhstan.
It is noted that this year's population growth rate has slowed significantly compared to previous years. At the same time, more than half of the country's regions are experiencing population decline due to high migration rates.
Five regions with above-average growth rates were highlighted: Astana city (3.92%), Shymkent city (1.99%), Almaty city (1.46%), Almaty region (1.34%), and Mangistau region (1.11%). Additionally, four more regions saw population growth, but below the national average. These are Aktobe, Atyrau, Akmola, and Kyzylorda regions.
A decrease in population was observed in all other regions. The largest decrease was recorded in North Kazakhstan, Abay, and Ulytau regions. In North and East Kazakhstan regions, the birth rate was lower than the death rate, resulting in a natural decrease. In other regions, natural population growth has been maintained.
Migration growth showed positive results in only five areas: the three major cities - Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent - and in Almaty and Mangistau regions, where the number of arrivals exceeded the number of departures. In other regions, the opposite occurred, with more people leaving than arriving.
The urban population grew by 1.2% from January to July, reaching 12,926,000 people. The rural population decreased by 0.38%, amounting to 7,482,000 people. Consequently, the share of urban residents in Kazakhstan's population reached 63.3%, while the rural population accounted for 36.7%.
It is worth noting that as of July 1, 2025, Tajikistan's population also exceeded 10.6 million people. From January to June, 116,200 newborns and 17,200 deaths were registered. Among the deceased were 800 children under one year of age.
