Tearful farewell ceremony for service dogs in China

In China, a touching ceremony was held in honor of police dogs who saved human lives and showed bravery in dangerous situations. Four service dogs officially retired after many years of duty and were handed over to new families. This was reported by South China Morning Post.

At the ceremony, they bid farewell to a 10-year-old Belgian shepherd named Mett, who helped catch fraudsters in 2017, a 10-year-old cocker spaniel Kerry, who served as a sapper, a 10-year-old Malinois named Majingtian, who rescued three people during a typhoon, and an 8-year-old Labrador retriever Eli, who gained great experience in searching for explosives.

The online broadcast of the ceremony gathered more than three million viewers. The most touching moment of the farewell was when Eli saw his trainer, unexpectedly broke free from the leash, and ran towards him. This scene brought tears to the eyes of those present.

“When I saw Eli running towards his trainer, my heart trembled, and tears came to my eyes. These four dogs have a very strong bond with their mentors,” said one of the ceremony attendees.

In China, service dogs undergo very difficult selection and training. The selection process lasts one to two years, after which they are prepared for service in the navy, the air force, or police units. They then serve for five to eight years.

For retired dogs, a new home is sought. They may be adopted by volunteers or former trainers from law enforcement agencies. Thus, the heroic dogs step into a peaceful life, but their courage and loyalty shown during their service remain in people’s memory.
