The Israeli army has launched heavy air strikes on Gaza City. Entire apartment buildings were destroyed in the attacks, and many families were forced to leave their homes in search of safety. According to Israel, more than 250,000 residents have fled the city.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called Gaza Hamas’s “last stronghold”. However, the UN warned that these actions would further worsen the situation of civilians already suffering from famine. Residents say the strikes are often targeting schools and shelters.
Many families are fleeing the city at night in darkness. Moving south is expensive, and some cannot afford it. At the same time, Hamas is urging residents to stay and not leave.
The Qatari government also strongly criticised Israel. After the attack on Hamas representatives in Doha, Qatari officials accused Netanyahu of trying to reshape the region in his own interests. The health ministry in Gaza said dozens of civilians had been killed in recent days.
