It was noted that the number of weddings in Azerbaijan has sharply decreased since July 2025. For example, while more than 5,000 marriages were registered in June, this figure dropped to 2,694 in July. Experts link this situation to the legal prohibition of marriages between close relatives.
According to the data, the law on the prohibition of marriages between close relatives came into force on July 1, 2025. According to the new procedure, marriage between children of brothers and sisters who have a common grandfather or grandmother, as well as biologically related cousins and aunts, is completely prohibited.
The main goal of this decision is to reduce the number of children born with genetic defects and ensure a healthy generation. Medical professionals emphasize that marriages between relatives often cause various hereditary diseases, which pose a serious threat to the health of future generations.
According to the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan, 12,146 divorces were registered in the country in January-July 2025. However, this indicator has slightly decreased compared to last year. It was noted that the divorce rate decreased from 2.1 to 2.0 per 1,000 people.
According to the new law, all persons applying for marriage are required to present a birth certificate and documents about their parents in order to determine the degree of kinship. If violations are detected, administrative or criminal liability is established for such actions.
