The situation in the Middle East is becoming more complicated. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the Egyptian side has sharply increased military power on the Sinai Peninsula, which is considered contrary to the historic peace treaty signed in 1979. This was reported by the Axios publication.
According to Netanyahu's statement, without any explanation, Cairo has begun expanding air bases in the Gaza region, constructing underground structures, and increasing the number of troops. According to him, such actions could disrupt the balance in the region.
Egypt, in turn, denies such accusations and emphasizes that all actions are being taken within the framework of national security. Cairo's main concern is the possibility of Gaza residents entering the Sinai Peninsula as mass refugees following Israel's military operations.
Israel, on the contrary, accuses Egypt of blocking the route for refugees and limiting their access to Gaza. Netanyahu believes that Cairo's actions will not only complicate the situation in the region but also question the historic peace agreement between Israel and Egypt.
According to reports, direct negotiations between the two countries have not yielded sufficient results. Following this, Israel appealed to the US, urging Washington to exert pressure on Egypt.
Egypt, however, remains firm in its position, emphasizing that no violations were committed.
Experts say that if the tension continues, the unique peace treaty in the region may be at risk.
