Zabihullah Mujahid, a representative of the currently ruling Taliban movement in Afghanistan, responded to US President Donald Trump's demand to return the Bagram airbase. According to him, Afghanistan will not relinquish its territory under any conditions and will not allow interference in the country's internal affairs.
As is known, Bagram Air Base was the largest strategic point for the American military in Afghanistan, and they left it in 2021. The Taliban recalled that within the framework of the agreement signed in Doha, the United States pledged not to "threat the territorial integrity of Afghanistan and not to interfere in its internal affairs." Therefore, they must fulfill their promises.
In his statement, Zabihullah Mujahid emphasized that Afghanistan strives to establish mutually beneficial and constructive relations with all countries, and the US should pursue a rational and pragmatic policy without repeating past mistakes.
The head of the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense of the country, Fasihuddin Fitrat, also spoke on the topic. In his opinion, the issue of "returning the base" cannot be resolved through a political agreement. "Not a single inch of Afghan land is a trade object, we don't need such an agreement," he said.
According to Politico, there is currently no information that US officials are conducting any open negotiations with Afghanistan regarding the Bagram base. However, the situation became even more acute after Trump's sharp statements.
As a reminder, Trump previously issued a harsh warning on his Truth Social network, stating, "If Afghanistan does not return the US-built Bagram base, the consequences will be dire." He also accused the Joe Biden administration of surrendering the airbase to the Taliban, allowing China to exert influence over the region.
In 2021, after the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban seized full power in the country in a short period. Now, however, the Bagram issue has once again become a new point of contention in Washington-Kabul relations.
