Today, water is considered the most valuable resource in the world, and in Gaza its price is measured by human life for a single glass. This was stated by Turkey’s First Lady and Chair of the UN High-Level Advisory Council on the “Zero Waste” initiative, Emine Erdoğan, during the “Zero Waste – Drop by Drop” exhibition organized by the Turkish Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change in New York.
Erdoğan emphasized that humanity is currently living in a dark era where water is being used as a weapon of genocide. Since October 7, 2023, Israel has deliberately destroyed Gaza’s water infrastructure: 85 percent of water pipes, treatment facilities, wells, and infrastructure are non-functional.
“Palestinians are forced to walk long distances to meet their daily water needs. Sometimes they die from rocket strikes while waiting in line. Small children struggle to carry heavy water containers – this is a grave blow to humanity’s conscience. People are forced to drink unsafe water. Essentially, in Gaza there is no moral, legal, or humanitarian ‘red line’ left. Children live in a world where they cannot ask: ‘Mom, what are we having for dinner?’ A state that has lost its moral compass has started a fight against human conscience. Humanity must not lose this battle,” said Turkey’s First Lady.
Erdoğan expressed hope for a just world where water and bread are not used as weapons, international law is respected, and universal human values apply to all. She believes this will ensure the protection of humanity’s rights and values and constitute an important step towards global justice.
