Turkey has cancelled its plan to introduce strict rules on making kebabs in the European Union. If it had gone ahead, the type of meat, slice thickness and even marinating procedure would have been regulated.
Germany’s widespread kebab industry could have been most affected by these rules. The German version of kebab is prepared with various vegetables and sauces, differing from the traditional Turkish method.
The German government and producers opposed the initiative. Former minister Cem Özdemir stated that kebab has also become part of German cuisine.
The Turkish Kebab Federation officially withdrew its application on 23 September. According to European Commission officials, the initiative was expected to be rejected anyway.
