US demands India to give up Russian oil

The US, during the process of forming a new trade agreement with India, has set as a main condition the restriction of New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil.

According to Reuters, during the negotiations Washington representatives emphasized to their Indian counterparts the need to reduce Russian oil purchases in order to lower tariffs and reach a trade agreement.

American officials stated that the talks are progressing effectively, however, in their view, additional work is required regarding access to the US market, trade deficit, as well as reducing energy supplies from Russia.

Thus, through the new agreement, Washington is seeking to distance India from Russia and strengthen its own economic interests.
