Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkiyan raised the issue of moving the country's capital from Tehran again at a meeting with entrepreneurs of the Hormuzgan region. According to him, moving the capital from Tehran is not a choice, but a necessity.
"I told the Supreme Leader (Ali Khamenei) about the need to move the capital towards the Persian Gulf. We have no other choice, we are forced to do this, if we continue on this path, problems will increase. Our water reserves are dwindling day by day, and recently, subsidence has been observed. In some areas of Tehran, the subsidence has reached 30 centimeters," the Iranian president said.
Since becoming president, Pezeshkiyon has repeatedly spoken about moving the capital. In his opinion, the country's capital should be located in the south, by the sea. This is not only an economic and political issue, but also an environmental one. Major problems in Tehran, such as water scarcity, air pollution, and soil subsidence, have undoubtedly become pressing issues.
Tehran is Iran's largest city with a population of over 13 million. It has been the capital of the country since 1795. The issue of moving the capital to another location was discussed in Iran several times at the time, and debates on this topic were also brought to the agenda in 2009, 2013, and 2017.
The current proposals of the Iranian president clearly demonstrate the necessity of relocating the city. Moving the capital to the Persian Gulf will be an important step not only for the country's economy but also for maintaining environmental sustainability and long-term water reserves.
