Only 2.5 months of reserves remain in Istanbul reservoirs

According to estimates, the water reserves in the reservoirs supplying Istanbul, Turkey's most populous city, will only last for 75 days without precipitation.

According to the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Authority, reservoirs are currently 27.8% full (241.3 million out of 868 million cubic meters). This is the lowest figure in the last decade, with reservoirs being 16% full at the same time, excluding 2023.

Since April, water reserves have been steadily decreasing below 80%. Of the ten reservoirs that supply the city with water, only one is currently more than a quarter full, and four contain less than two percent.

The government urges residents to conserve water, noting that the city with a population of 16 million consumes approximately 3.18 million cubic meters of water daily. Istanbul city forecasters also predict heavy rainfall in the city next week.

It should be recalled that due to severe drought in 2023, the city authorities temporarily stopped water supply to parks and private boulevards.
