The only reason that forced Trump to keep Iceland in NATO

Former US President Donald Trump agreed to keep Iceland in NATO for only one reason. The Guardian reported this, citing a new book by former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

According to Stoltenberg, Iceland was retained in the alliance due to the possibility of observing Russian submarines. Trump previously questioned Iceland's participation in NATO, as the country lacks armed forces and defense spending does not meet 2% of GDP requirements.

It has been reported that Jim Mattis, who served as US Secretary of Defense from 2017 to 2019, managed to dissuade Trump from this decision. He said that NATO bases in Iceland play an important role in monitoring Russia's underwater activities.

For this reason, Trump believed Iceland was of strategic importance to the alliance and agreed to keep it in the organization.
