The Bangladesh government has deployed warships and patrol helicopters to protect the national fish, the *Hilsa*, from illegal fishing. This was reported by the Defense Forces.
According to reports, the henna migrates from the Bay of Bengal to rivers annually to lay eggs. Therefore, the authorities imposed a three-week ban on fishing from October 4th to 25th. During this period, 17 warships and patrol aircraft conduct daily monitoring.
Hilsa is not only a favorite dish in Bangladesh, but also the main source of income for millions of people. In the markets of Dhaka, one kilogram of this fish is sold for 2,200 goats ($18.4). According to experts, climate change and rising sea levels are affecting the fish population.
According to WorldFish expert Abdul Wahab, using drones instead of warships would be more effective. During the ban, the government distributed 25 kg of rice to each fisherman's family, but the fishermen do not consider this assistance sufficient.
