US First Lady Melania Trump announced that in the past 24 hours, seven Ukrainian children and one Russian girl had been reunited with their families. She shared this in her video message, which was published on the official White House YouTube channel.
According to Melania Trump, the communication channel with the Russian side was established after the meeting between the US and Russian presidents in Alaska in August. At that time, she personally handed a letter to Vladimir Putin, writing about the fate of children separated by the war. In the letter, Melania emphasized that ending the war is important not only for Ukraine but also for the well-being of Russian children.
“He responded in writing and expressed his readiness for direct communication. Thus, we began exchanging information about Ukrainian children in Russia,” said the US First Lady. According to her, an “open communication line” has since been established between the two countries.
Over the past three months, Melania’s team has met with Russian representatives several times to discuss the reunification of children with their families. The Russian side provided information, photos, and lists of social, medical, and psychological support being given to Ukrainian children.
Trump stated that Russia had demonstrated transparency in this process, and the information provided was verified by the relevant US government agencies. The Ombudsman of the Ukrainian Parliament and the President’s Commissioner for Children’s Rights also participated in the review.
According to Melania Trump, Russia agreed to facilitate the return of Ukrainian teenagers under 18 years old who are still on Russian territory.
“We are preparing to reunite another group of children with their families in the coming weeks. I hope peace comes as soon as possible,” said the US First Lady.
