According to Politico, Israel’s strike on the Qatari capital a month ago not only heightened regional political tensions but also triggered active U.S. diplomatic intervention. As a result, a ceasefire was reached in the Gaza Strip.
Reports state that on September 9, Israel carried out an airstrike on Doha, Qatar’s capital. The Israeli military said the targets were Hamas leaders who had planned the October 7, 2023 attack. Hamas claimed that five people were killed, including the son of its chief negotiator and a Qatari security officer.
Following the incident, Qatar accused Israel of a “cowardly attack” and threatened to withdraw from mediation efforts in Gaza. Israel, in turn, accused Qatar of “harboring terrorists.” Amid rising tensions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formally apologized to Doha at the end of the month.
As Politico writes, this event became a turning point in the diplomatic process. U.S. President Donald Trump used the situation to exert strong pressure on Israel, thereby accelerating the peace process.
According to White House sources, Trump forced Israel to halt fire after the strike on Doha. “The president acted decisively. The pressure left Israel no choice but to agree to a truce,” said a senior official.
Thus, the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip came into force on October 10. Under the first phase, Hamas is to release Israeli hostages, while Israel will free Palestinian prisoners and withdraw its troops to agreed positions.
