The Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano, located in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province, erupted on Wednesday, spewing ash 10 kilometers into the sky. The alert level was raised to its highest point following the eruption.
The volcano erupted twice overnight. Residents were warned of danger and ordered to evacuate a 7-kilometer radius around the area.
Dozens of people living in nearby villages were evacuated. Ten people were killed in the volcano’s previous eruption last year.
The airport in Maumere was closed due to the incident, but flights to Bali are continuing.
