US President Donald Trump made harsh statements during a meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy and threw a battle map from the table during the negotiations. This was reported by The Financial Times, citing sources familiar with the negotiation process.
According to sources, the meeting on October 17 was very controversial and stressful. During a debate with Zelenskyy, Trump raised his voice several times and "permanently cursed." According to the president, the Ukrainian side is not fully controlling the situation on the battlefield.
The combat maps Zelenskyy brought during the meeting also didn't change Trump's mind. During the conversation, he threw a map depicting the front line in Ukraine from the table and said that he was "tired of seeing such things."
According to a source in the newspaper, the US leader demanded that Kyiv cede the entire territory of Donbas to Russia and reach an agreement with Moscow. At the same time, Trump threatened Zelenskyy with a harsh warning: "If Putin wants to, he will destroy you."
For information, Trump's telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin took place on October 16. As reported by The Washington Post, Putin proposed returning parts of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions to Ukraine in exchange for recognizing full control over Donetsk.
It was also reported that during negotiations in Istanbul in June, the Russian side presented a two-option memorandum prohibiting the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from several regions or their redeployment.
The FT noted that during the meeting, Trump repeated the theses of his conversation with Putin and "lectured" Zelenskyy. After the negotiations, it was reported that the Ukrainian president was very dissatisfied and remained "emotionally depressed."
On the same day, in an interview with NBC News, Zelenskyy said that both sides must remain in their positions to stop the war.
Western publications believe that Trump supports a diplomatic settlement of the conflict and may see an agreement with Russia as the only solution to the cessation of hostilities.
