Among the national dishes of Karakalpakstan, “Balik Karma” holds a special place and has now been officially patented. According to the Ministry of Justice, this dish has been registered as a geographical indication.
With this decision, the name “Balik Karma” and its traditional preparation method are now legally protected. At the same time, quality standards are strengthened, and opportunities for promoting Karakalpakstan’s gastronomic brand are expanded.
This dish is based on ancient fishing traditions formed in areas near the Aral Sea and the Amu Darya delta. Its preparation method is also unique: it consists of boiled fish, broth, finely chopped vegetables, and pieces of dried dough measuring 1×1 or 2×2 centimeters. The fat removed from the surface of the broth is poured over onions, giving the dish its distinctive flavor and aroma.
Experts note that a geographical indication is an intellectual property object that reflects the connection of a product with a particular region, as well as its quality and reputation.
Thus, “Balik Karma” has become not only a national dish but also a brand that represents the cultural and gastronomic heritage of Karakalpakstan.
