On the basis of a request from Turkmenistan, the Russian government extradited a citizen of Ashgabat, Saddam Gulyamov. He is known as one of those who openly criticized former President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and the current political leadership.
Gulyamov criticized the government of Turkmenistan on social networks for the country's food shortage, economic pressure, and policies that condemned citizens to a difficult life. He also criticized the government for denying the existence of the coronavirus pandemic and concealing anti-epidemic actions.
According to experts, this extradition is assessed as a worrying situation related to freedom of speech. Because he was returned to a state where he could be punished for civil criticism.
Gulyamov's relatives and human rights activists are seriously concerned about his safety. They are asking international organizations to take control of this matter.
So far, the authorities of Turkmenistan have not given an open comment on this extradition.
