A Peruvian court found former president Martin Vizcarra guilty of bribery and sentenced him to 14 years in prison. He was also deprived of the right to hold public office for 9 years.
According to court documents, Viscarra served as Governor of Mokegua Province from 2011 to 2014 and received a $676,000 bribe in exchange for construction contracts. Reuters news agency reported this.
The trial began in October 2024. Viscarra denied the charges against him, calling it political persecution. He became president in 2018, but was ousted by Congress two years later following suspicions of corruption.
