Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, surpassed Tokyo in the ranking of the world's most densely populated cities. According to UN data, the Jakarta metropolis has a population of 42 million.
Next is Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh with a population of 37 million people, and in third place is Tokyo with a population of 33 million people. It should be noted that in the 2018 report, the first place belonged to Tokyo.
The report shows that if in 1950 about 20 percent of the world's population lived in cities, now this figure has reached 50 percent. By 2050, two-thirds of the world's population growth is expected to be in urban areas.
The top 10 most populous cities - Jakarta, Dhaka, Tokyo, New Delhi, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Cairo, Manila, Calcutta and Seoul - nine of them are located on the Asian continent.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junxia noted:
"Urbanization is the main force that determines our time. If it can be managed correctly, new opportunities may open up for climate change, economic development, and social justice."
