In Russia, the threat of complete blocking of WhatsApp is increasing

In Russia, a serious situation is developing around the WhatsApp messenger - if the platform does not fully comply with the requirements of local legislation, it may not work at all in the country. This was officially announced by Roskomnadzor, the federal service overseeing communications, information technology, and mass communications in Russia.

Restrictive measures against WhatsApp are being gradually tightened. The reason cited is the messenger's failure to comply with legal norms aimed at preventing crimes in Russia.

According to Roskomnadzor, the platform is used for organizing terrorist acts, recruiting executors and participants, as well as for fraud against citizens and other types of crimes. Therefore, the service was forced to take control of the messenger and expand restrictions.

The report notes that the restrictions are being implemented in stages - allowing users to switch to other messengers. If WhatsApp refuses to comply with the requirements of Russian legislation, its complete blocking is inevitable.

The quality of calls on WhatsApp had significantly deteriorated since August. In October, Roskomnadzor officially stated that it had partially restricted the messenger's activities, explaining this by the need to combat criminals. On November 28, serious interruptions in the service, delays in sending messages, and difficulties in sending photos and videos were also observed throughout the country, especially in Moscow.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messengers in Russia. According to Google Play, it ranks fifth among applications in the "Communication" category. According to Mediascope's analysis for October 2025, WhatsApp's audience in Russia reached 96.2 million users, while Telegram's reached 91 million.

Discussions about the complete blocking of WhatsApp in Russia have been ongoing since 2024. The head of the State Duma committee, Sergey Boyarsky, called the rumors about this "rumors" in December last year and called for a cautious response to the issue.
