Ukraine-US meeting: after talks with Moscow
The important meeting between the US and Ukrainian delegations in Miami has concluded. US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner attended the meeting. On the Ukrainian side, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, and the Chief of the General Staff, Andriy Gnatov, participated.
These consultations were organized only three days after the visit of Whitkoff and Kushner to Moscow. On December 2, they held five-hour talks with Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin, during which they discussed the new version of the US peace plan agreed with Ukraine.
Sharp positions of Moscow and Kyiv
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that a complete compromise was not reached at the end of the negotiations, but some US proposals "have acceptable aspects." According to him, the documents are aimed at a "long-term peaceful solution."
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has consistently emphasized that the most complex issue in the negotiations is the fate of the territories occupied by Russia. Kyiv does not accept Moscow's demand for the withdrawal of troops from Donbas and does not consider the vague security guarantees offered by the US satisfactory.
Barriers to compromise and a new phase of diplomacy
Although the meeting in Miami is the next stage of the several-day intensive diplomatic marathon between the US, Ukraine, and Russia, serious discrepancies remain on the main points of the peace plan. The territorial issue is the biggest obstacle to the negotiations.
At the same time, the revival of direct dialogue between the USA and Russia indicates the beginning of a new era in international diplomacy.
